An Epic Migration

At the Trust’s Salmon and Trout Research Centre on the River Frome, near Wareham in Dorset, every spring, scientists catch and tag young salmon (smolts) as they swim down river and go out to sea through Poole Harbour.

We caught a sea trout!

We have finally broken our duck down the harbour and caught a sea trout! Unfortunately (for us, perhaps not the fish!) a larger one escaped us as we were about to land it the other day. I have attached a photo of the fish (it was aged 1.1SM+) but probably more importantly a close up of the Floy tag I am using this year. I will use this tag on both the salmon & sea trout we catch in the harbour. It does not carry a number so does not need to be examined closely. If you can advise your members of the tag and ask that any catches or sightings are reported to me I would be grateful.

Best wishes  Bill

42” hen salmon

Hi There,

I thought that you may be interested in a 42” hen salmon I caught on the fly last week  on a beat above Wareham  – please see the link below to Mike Ladles website detailing the capture with pictures.

Kind regards
