River report May 2010

We are now approaching the end of May and at last things are warming up, and the fishing is on the up every day.

April and early May were terribly slow, cold, and not hugely rewarding for those who braved fishing in gusty, quiet often biting northerly winds.

We are suffering from a lack of in channel weed both on the Frome and the Piddle, I feel as a result of those July spates we encountered last year just as all our Ranunculus Aquatilis finished flowering!

Regarding our Frome Swan population, I have had a long chat with an aquatic biologist from the CEH (www.ceh.ac.uk), a large percentage are Frome Swans, i.e. ringed on the river, a very small number from Christchurch but no swans with swannery leg rings, more info on my next report.

The early season Grannom hatches were sparse but the medium and large Olive’s have been rather good and I am very confident that the Mayfly this year will be every bit as good as last year.

I have heard of a number of wild three pound fish already this season, and the largest wild Brown Trout reported to me last season was a few ounces the right side of seven pounds, and I saw the photographs!
Your committee have been attending endless meetings regarding the welfare of our Dorset Rivers and working hard to safeguard their futures, there is a huge amount of work that goes on behind the scenes so that we can all cast a line into clean water when we get the time.

Regarding on the ground work or rather in the water work, all the in stream restoration work that has happened over the last few years, particularly on the Frome has been seen as a great success, we recently carried out a detailed electric fishing survey for clients on the Frome, one beat having had works done, the other had not, and as we hoped the fish population on the improved stretch was impressive not only for Salmonids but also for the important coarse fish population on the Frome.

A stunning salmon was reported on Dr Mike Ladles website (see last post) earlier this month, another species of fish on the Frome that deserves recognition (other than our British record Grayling) is the Roach, their numbers down slightly over the years but this strain of Frome Roach I am sure is again something special and needs looking after, huge fish to well over that magical three pound mark were caught on the lower Frome this winter.

Our rivers are very special to us all; if you would like to add a little to my next report please drop me an e mail john@riverworks.co.uk

AGM Highlights

Chairman’s Report

The Chairman opened by quoting the Associations mission statement: “To conserve and enhance the native fish-stocks and the natural habitat of the Frome, Piddle & West Dorset Rivers”

He then looked at the strategic moves in our joining the West Country Rivers Trust and the South West Rivers Association. He announced that Richard Slocock was to become a Trustee of W.C.R.T.

Secondly he itemised the practical aspects of our work:

The Riverfly partnership being run by John Aplin & Richard Slocock, looking at the invertebrate life of the rivers. He asked for further volunteers to take part in this national project. Please contact John Aplin or Richard Slocock.

  • The sea trout tagging work in conjunction with thanks to Barry Bust & Bill Beaumont.
  • Redd counting & gravel washing by John Aplin. Once again 44 redds were found above Dorchester, thanks to Loud’s Mill fish pass.
  • River Brit barrier removal: He reported the sad loss of John Hughes but welcomed the support of Geoff May and Roger Genge in getting Jessops Weir passed and the Association has been able to obtain the funds to cost out the work for Palmers Brewery Weir.
  • Poaching: We continue to put pressure on the Poole Harbour Authorities, E.A. and police to control poaching.
  • The salmon run through the counter for 2009 was 602 fish. Not very good!
  • Pollution: Two cases of pollution from Warmwell gravel workings. Hopefully the E.A. will take the necessary action, both were reported by members.

He went on to thank the E.A. for the excellent work that had been done at Woodsford and John Aplin reported that a new redd site had been identified at the site.

He praised Bill Beaumont and Anton Ibbotson for their work on the tagging of 10,000 salmon parr.

He thanked Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust, West Country Rivers Trust, S.W.R.T. the Wild Trout Trust, Dorset Wildlife Trust, the E.A. and the committee and it’s collective wisdom.

Following the speakers The Chairman invited Chris Rothwell to make a presentation to Richard Slocock in recognition of his hard work on behalf of the Association.

Annual General Meeting of the Association

The Annual General Meeting of the Association will be held at 6.30p.m. On Friday the 9th of April 2010, at East Stoke River Laboratories.

Your Committee has been busy over the past year and now the time has come to announce the new and exciting developments to which we have signed up to.

You will notice that we have a water drop logo on the right of our website this is to signify that we are being funded by the E.U Projectwater who are granting us funds to carry out wetland work and encourage others to join with us to enhance the rivers environment.

We are also likely to obtain other funding for work on the rivers as a direct result of us joining The West Country Rivers Trust. This year this will benefit the Rivers Frome, Piddle and The Brit.

So please attend the meeting as we have other news and developments in the pipeline.

GUEST SPEAKERS-

Dr Dylan Bright of West Country Rivers Trust &
Dr Arlin Rickard, National Association of Rivers Trusts

There will be raffle on the night to defray the cost of the AGM. So if you have any prizes to donate contact Clive Thorp or just bring them along on the night. clivethorp@sky.com
