Frome Enhancements

The River Frome Rehabilitation Plan sets out a way to improve the river condition of the Frome SSSI between Dorchester and Wareham.
This project located east of Dorchester is aiming to undo some of the historic river ‘improvement’ works of the 1970’s by returning dredged gravels to a highly degraded reach. Removing raised embankments, bed raising and channel narrowing will all be aspects of the project including the addition of Large Woody Debris to the channel.
The gravel is being sourced in the adjacent field with Planning Permission granted to extract and clean all the gravel required before being placed in the river.
It is hoped this reach will become a favoured spot for salmonid spawning in the attempt to return it to its former glory.
